Tobacco harms the health, the treasury, and the spirit of Cameroon. Every year more than 2700 of its people are killed by tobacco-caused disease, while more than 71000 children and more than 1012000 adults continue to use tobacco each day. Complacency in the face of the tobacco epidemic will ensure the tobacco industry continues to run roughshod over the lives of Cameroon's citizens and ensure that tobacco's death toll will grow with each passing year. Tobacco control advocates must reach out to other communities to strengthen their efforts in this mortal fight.

Retail volume sales of cigarettes continued to decline in Cameroon in 2013, largely as a result of increased public awareness of the negative health effects of smoking. In addition, Cameroonian law prohibits the advertising of tobacco products, which has also contributed to curbing consumer interest in tobacco despite increasing consumer purchasing power. The leading player British American Tobacco (BAT) recently came under fire for illegal promotional activities. The Littoral regional bureau of the Cameroon Consumers League (CCL) wrote officially to the company with regard to the illegal display of stickers for its Lambert & Butler brand. Although there has been no legal action as yet, this move negatively impacted the image of the brand and is likely to further discourage retailers.
